Our Commitment
Responsible engagement begins with listening, respect and accountability—and requires evidence before outcomes are claimed.
Guiding principle: Consider the people affected by our work and communicate honestly about our contribution and its limits.
Purpose
JIL recognises that business activities can affect employees, clients, suppliers, communities and other stakeholders. This approach establishes principles for considering those effects, engaging stakeholders respectfully and pursuing legitimate social and economic value through responsible project delivery.
Scope
These principles apply to JIL’s operations, projects and community-facing activities. Their application should be proportionate to the scale, location, duration and potential social risks of each engagement.
Guiding Principles
- Respect the dignity, rights, cultures, livelihoods and legitimate interests of affected stakeholders.
- Identify material social risks and opportunities during relevant project planning and implementation.
- Communicate honestly about project objectives, responsibilities, limitations and expected outcomes.
- Engage stakeholders in a respectful, accessible and culturally appropriate manner.
- Avoid or minimise unnecessary disruption, exclusion, discrimination and foreseeable social harm.
- Support local employment, skills development and supplier participation where relevant, lawful and feasible.
- Provide appropriate channels for stakeholders to raise questions, concerns or complaints.
- Address legitimate concerns promptly and fairly, while protecting confidentiality where appropriate.
Project Application
Social considerations should be integrated into relevant project decisions rather than treated solely as separate charitable activities. Where a project may significantly affect communities or vulnerable groups, appropriate assessment, consultation and specialist advice should be considered.
Responsibilities
Management provides oversight of the company’s approach. Project leads are responsible for identifying relevant stakeholders, communicating material project information and escalating significant concerns. Personnel and partners acting on JIL’s behalf are expected to behave respectfully and comply with applicable requirements.
Monitoring and Learning
Where appropriate, JIL will record stakeholder engagement, concerns raised, responses provided and relevant social outputs or outcomes. Any public claims about beneficiaries, community improvements or social impact must be supported by appropriate evidence.
Review
This approach will be reviewed at least annually and when significant changes to JIL’s activities or stakeholder risks make an earlier review appropriate.
Accountability & Related Policies
